Silkworm 1st instar

1st instar larva (3-4 days)

“Hakitate”
Once the larvae have hatched from the eggs, they are moved to the place such as a box where they are reared, fed with mulberries. We call the start of rearing process “Hakitate”(sweeping) .

It is called “Hakitate”(sweeping) because the larvae that hatched on the egg-laying paper are swept away with a feather duster and moved to the rearing area.

“Kego” / “Gisan” (newly hatched larva)
The body size is about 3mm.
When they hatch, they are black in color and have hair on them, but after a few days, their bodies turn yellowish-white and the hair appears to have fallen off. In reality, the hair still grows and disappears when the molts.

“Kyusou” (supply mulberry)
In order to maintain the same growth rate, give the first mulberry to the eggs half a day to a day after hatching begins, when all the eggs have hatched.

Twice a day in the morning and evening, give small pieces of soft mulberry leaves (the 2nd or 3rd leaf from the tip of the branch).
※If you are keeping a small number of them, you can feed them whole leaves as this will prevent the leaves from drying out.

”Jyosa” / “Kojiritori” (cleaning)
Silkworms are creatures that are susceptible to diseases, so cleaning (removing mulberry food particles and droppings) should be done at least once every two days. We call the cleaning ”Jyosa” / “Kojiritori” .
※It is important to grow in a clean environment.

1 sleep (about 1 day)
The larvae continue to feed on mulberry leaves for 3 to 4 days without sleeping. The amount of food they eat gradually decreases, and they enter a sleep period to prepare for shedding.

Molting
When the larva enters its sleep stage, it spits out a little thread on mulberry leaves, fixes its footing, raises its head, and stops moving.
Although the larva’s body is not moving, it is preparing a new outer skin inside its body.
※Please be careful not to touch the larva too much while it is sleeping, as this may cause it to fail to molt.
