After tying each of the 820 newly prepared silk warp threads to the previous warp, we begin drawing the new threads through the loom.
We work with a small group of threads at a time. Gently pulling the previous warp forward, we guide each knot through the reed and heddles.
Fine silk threads can easily twist or become tangled when their tension shifts. We draw the threads forward a little, pause, and check how they are lying.
As gently as brushing a child’s hair, we comb the threads with a brush, easing out small tangles and twists before drawing them forward again.
As the knots pass through the reed and heddles, the previous warp is gradually replaced by the newly prepared 820 threads.
Moving too quickly makes the smallest changes in the threads harder to notice. We take our time, watching how each group moves and allowing the threads to pass through slowly and steadily.
