Tensan Silk & Hand-spun Mawata with Fern Fiber Leno Weave Textile No.1

Collector’s Gallery

A one-of-a-kind textile woven with rare Tensan silk and hand-spun mawata blended with fern fiber in the weft. Within its quiet beige field, the textile holds both a wild natural texture and a soft refinement.

Air and light move through the leno weave, allowing the character of each material to appear gently rather than dramatically. It may be worn as a stole, or quietly placed within a room as a textile work.

About the Work

The rare light of Tensan silk and the rustic presence of hand-spun mawata blended with fern fiber resonate together within the same cloth. It holds a wildness, yet never becomes harsh, remaining quietly soft.

The transparent structure of leno weave holds light and air, and the nuances of color shift little by little with season and angle. When worn, it feels light; when viewed, the depth of the weave appears quietly.

Background

For this work, Tensan silk was gathered from cocoons raised between our studio in Yamanashi and a friend in Iwate who cares for them with us. Because the silk is extremely limited, it was combined with hand-spun mawata blended with fern fiber, creating a textile that is both rare and quietly grounded in nature.

The beige tone of the fern fiber and the soft luminosity of Tensan silk are held within colorful silk warp threads, which create gentle shadow rather than strong contrast. The result is a cloth of quiet depth, natural grace, and distinct material presence.

Leno weave allows air to pass between the threads, holding light and creating transparency and depth when wrapped. In this work, the tactile qualities and luster of each material unfold within that structure, leaving a quiet change each time it is worn or seen.
